Joseph Nicéphore Niépce and the world's first camera (picture is not of his camera)
Joseph Nicéphore Niépce is considered the father of photography. He first began experiments on photochemistry in 1816 and managed to take a temporary photo. The film didn't hold the image, which proved to be a bit of a problem. After a lot of experiments, Niépce found out that asphalt was the right way to go. When exposed to light, particles would harden, and the softer particles (the ones not exposed to light) would then be washed off with lavender oil. This produced an early positive of an image.
